Time and tuna are running out!
Today is World Ocean's Day and Greenpeace to celebrate the day has named the Pacific's first international marine reserves comprising of 13 countries.
According to Greenpeace Australia, Pacific Oceans Team Leader, Nilesh Gounder, this all matters as the Pacific's greatest resource, tuna is being stolen from these areas, with little benefit to Pacific nations.
One of the three marine reserve areas named is WOMAR or the West Ocean Marine Reserve comprising of the area of international waters bound by PNG, Indonesia, the Federated States of Mircronesia and Palau.
The second marine reserve is GOMAR or the Greater Oceania Marine Reserve, bounded by PNG, the Solomon Islands, FSM, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Fiji, Tuvalu and Vanuatu and the third marine reserve is MOMAR or the Moana Marine Reserve bounded by Kiribati, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia.
Gounder said we must stand united to protect our marine resources.
