The Interim Education Minister said that all school managements have been advised that the main purpose of reviewing the Tuition Fee Assistance to the current primary and secondary schools formula, is to reduce the cost of education for parents.

Filipe Bole said that tuition fees have increased from the previous levels to what is being paid out now to schools.

He said the intention is to assist school managements to purchase necessary teaching and learning resources for which parents and students are not levied for.

Bole adds that it has been brought to the notice of the Ministry that some schools are using tuition fees for some other activities and programs not related to the school for which a grant was provided.

He said the Ministry is now looking into reviewing the formula for tuition fees assistance to be based on a disadvantage index. This index considers schools that are disadvantaged through given factors and provide greater assistance to schools that are genuinely disadvantaged

Bole's comment comes after a Daily ran a story yesterday on the issue of the cost of education getting higher by the year.
