DISMAC has confirmed that its tsunami public advisory to the general public has been cancelled after they were advised by the Nadi Weather Office and the cancellation of the warning by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

DISMAC and the Nadi Weather Office confirmed that the tsunami generated after the earthquake near Samoa early this morning poses no threat to Fiji now.

A tsunami warning was issued for American Samoa, Fiji and other small Pacific islands after a major 8.3 earthquake struck in the ocean off American Samoa at 5:48 this morning.

The earthquake hit about 190 kilometers from American Samoa at a depth of 33 kilometers.

Meanwhile, no reports of threatening waves have been received from Lau and Taveuni.

DISMAC added that they received reports however the waves were not threatening ones.

The Permanent Secretary for Education has called on schools in the low-lying areas and those located near the coastal areas around the country, as well as schools in the outer islands to close immediately following the Tsunami warning this morning.

In a statement, Filipe Jitoko said this closure is only for the schools located low-lying schools while schools in the high areas are to remain open and school to resume.

Meanwhile, the Ministry also called on teachers in low-lying areas to ensure that their students are sent home immediately and not to loiter in towns.

A general announcement to parents, please check the schools which your children attend as a number of schools have closed today.
