The tsunami warning issued for the Fiji group has been cancelled in the last hour.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii confirmed that the threat of a tsunami no longer exists however a tsunami was generated in Niue and it may have been destructive along the coasts near the earthquake center.

The warning was triggered after an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit off the coast of Tonga at around 6 o'clock this morning.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also advised that danger to boats and coastal structures can continue for several hours due to rapid currents.

They said while no tsunami threat exists some other areas may experience small sea level changes.
