Truck driver acquitted
Judge Justice Daniel Gounder concurred with majority of the assessors and found Abdul Aiyaz not guilty on all charges.
Aiyaz was arrested on June 6th, 2008 in Seaqaqa after 4,833 grams of marijuana was found in a specially built channel in the tray of the truck he was driving.
Aiyaz had picked the truck from the owner in Suva, drove to Natovi and was ferried to Nabaouwalu.
On his way to Seaqaqa, two police officers tries to hail him down but he failed to stop.
After giving chase, Aiyaz was stopped and arrested and when police searched the truck, they found the special compartment with drugs inside.
Aiyaz maintained his innocence saying that he had no knowledge of the drugs being hidden in the truck although police alleged that he had picked the truck from a re-known drug peddler in Suva.
