Tropical Cyclone Daman intensifying
As of 8 o'clock tonight, a gale warning is in force for the rest of Viti Levu, western Vanua Levu, the Lomaiviti Group, Vatulele, Beqa, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.
A tropical cyclone alert remains for the rest of Fiji.
Nadi Weather Office Deputy Director Alipate Waqaicelua confirms that Tropical Cyclone Daman has slowed down and has slightly intensified over the last three hours.
Tropical Cyclone Daman lies 325 kilometres North-North-West of Nadi and 245 kilometres North West of the Yasawas and is reaching its peak intensity with maximum winds of 110 km/hr with momentary gusts of 150 km/hr.
Waiqaicelua also confirms that Tropical Cyclone Daman is expected to make landfall between Rakiraki and Tavua and track right over Viti Levu before exiting land close Nausori or Suva.
The cyclone is moving southwards at around 15km per hour.
Occasional heavy falls are expected to cause flash flooding of low lying areas and flooding of rivers and streams.
Sea surges are expected near coastal areas due to sea surges. Flooding of low lying areas, rivers and streams is expected while, winds are expected to strengthen over the northern and western areas later today and possibly reach damaging gale force by tonight.
The weather office stresses that the tropical cyclone warning is in force and people must take all precaution.
People have been called to take extra precaution while travelling from Tavua towards Rakiraki as heavy rain is causing flooding in some areas along the highway.
There are reports, of flooding in Nanuku and Narewa in Rakiraki along the highway and motorists are advised to take precautions. Rakiraki police have gone out to inspect the areas and will give an update in the next hour.
The National DISMAC office is now fully activated and teams in all centers are on full standby.
Hotels and resorts in the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups are bracing themselves for the Tropical Cyclone Daman nears Fiji.
