Trial starts for former Nasinu mayor
The two are facing charges of abuse of office and embezzlement. It is alleged both had colluded to raise a cheque amounting to $2,344 for payment to Post Fiji Limited, however the cheque was cashed at the Westpac Bank without the knowledge of Post Fiji Limited.
Sheetal Singh who is a teller with Westpac Bank took the stand this afternoon as a FICAC witness.
Singh was the teller of the Westpac Nabua branch in 2006 when the alleged incident took place.
Singh told the court that she had sought an approval from her superiors in cashing the cheque which was made for Post Fiji Limited but could not remember who had brought the cheque to the bank.
Epeli Racule who is the Operational Risk Officer Investigations with Westpac was FICAC's second witness this afternoon and he told the court that he helps out Police and FICAC officers should they need information regarding any investigation.
Defence Lawyer, Rajendra Chaudhry asked Racule if there were any signs that the cheque brought to the bank, was forged.
Racule told the court that he did not see any signs of forgery or fraud and as such did not investigate the matter.
High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar has adjourned the case till 9.30 tomorrow morning where more witnesses are expected to take stand.
