The trial of Senior Immigration Officer charged with extortion was completed yesterday in the Nadi Magistrates Court.

Naibuka Vuli has been charged with 12 counts of extortion where 12 detainees paid him for having been detained at a detention centre, of which he was a Director.

In their closing address, FICAC told the Court that the Immigration Act is very clear , that under no circumstances is a detainee to pay for the costs of detention, that is meals and accommodation, the government and the carrier airline are always responsible for these costs.

However, Defense Counsel Kitione Vuataki argued that it was not Vuli's responsibility as a Senior Immigration Officer to look after detainees and that at the time the payments were made, they were made to the Company and not the Vuli.

The case has been adjourned to the 20th of January where Magistrate Mosese Naivalu will deliver judgment.
