Treason charge unknown
It is not known at this stage whether any of the accused persons in relation to the assassination plot case will be charged with treason, misprision of treason and instigating invasion.
Village News understands that the DPP's office will analyse the evidence and decide on whether those charges are appropriate based on the evidence gathered.
Sources within the DPP's office confirm that the DPP did not drop the treason charge laid by the police but this is normal practice where police lay charges and then the DPP analyses the evidence and the lays the charges based on the appropriate evidence.
We have been informed that there was no confusion between the DPP and the police and the proper procedures were followed.
Meanwhile Police Commissioner, Commodore Esala Teleni has denounced certain media reports that the police have threatened to arrest the Director of Public Prosecutions, Joe Naigulevu and his assistant, Ashishna Prasad.
Commodore Teleni said these are misleading statements as he has been in close consultations with the DPP and there was no threat made.
Our source has confirmed that there is no truth in the media reports that the DPP refused to file the charges. The source said that it’s sad that a rumor has been turned into a story, and they are in the process of contacting the media outlets.
