50 workers of the Works and Transport Ministry have been sacked over the last two years for offences relating to corruption and abuse of office.
Ministry spokesperson, Sainiana Waqainabete said the ministry's internal investigation team has identified a number of people who have been involved in corrupt practices and they have been taken to task.
She said some matters have also been referred to the police for criminal investigations.
Another eleven cases are currently being investigated by the police.
Meanwhile, the Works and Transport Ministry is also now clamping down hard on bogus contracts being issued where some officials are colluding with contractors and share the public funds after contracts are awarded.
Waqainabete said in 2007, a grass cutting and weeding contract was issued.
However no work was carried and some officials and the contractors defrauded the government of more than 160 thousand dollars.
Waqainabete said this matter has been dealt with following investigations and the official concerned has been charged and convicted.
