The Ministry of Transport said it will have to seriously consider the wide impacts of the increased fuel prices before due consideration is given to requests for an increase in taxi and bus fares.
Interim Minister Manu Korovulavula said stakeholders in the transport industry will definitely feel the pinch of the increased fuel prices, however, consumers cannot ask for an increase in their pay.
He also said that an increase in taxi or bus fares could lead to people resorting to other illegal means of transportation.
The new fuel prices came into effect at midnight. Motor spirit will now cost $1.98 cents per litre, which is a massive 24 cents increase while diesel will cost $1.55 per litre, a 14 cents increase.
For those who use kerosene for cooking, they will have to pay $1.28 per litre with the price of kerosene increasing by 13 cents. There has also been a significant increase in pre-mix outboard fuel with a litre costing $1.96.
