Training pays off for Labasa women
Just weeks after undergoing the bamboo, batik and coconut craft workshop in Labasa, three participants have used their skills to set about earning cash.
Lisi Simione, from Bulileka, Unaisi Ramacake, of Suweni and Nomai Ditui, of Korovuli in Seaqaqa used bamboo that grew near their homes or coconuts to produce artifacts that attracted crowds to a display in Labasa recently.
Ditui said they are happy to learn these new skills and it's perfect for women because it does not involve intensive labour and they don't have to walk far distances into the plantations to earn their income.
Ramacake spent hours submerged in rivers looking for prawns that she sells to meet the financial demands of educating her children.
Their newly acquired skills has allowed them to convert coconut shells into vases, bamboo into baskets, fans, accessories and even candle stands - they earn not less than $10 from each creation.
