Focus is now on having trained nurses on standby during the delivery of babies after a record 924 births were reported in Suva for the month of March alone.

Health Ministry spokesperson Iliesa Tora said that overall an average of 2,124 babies were delivered around the country with the country’s largest hospital recording 924 births.

According to Tora, this is the highest recorded in any single health institution ever.

Tora added now they are working on training midwives and nurses at the sub divisional health facilities to ensure that mothers get the best help.

Meanwhile, trained mid wives are also being sent out to sub divisional health facilities to pass on their experience and knowledge to staff.

A total of 924 births were recorded at CWM alone for March, with Lautoka and Labasa averaged around 600 births.
