Tragic Accident Investigations Almost Complete
Speaking to Fijivillage News, Director Traffic SSP Ramend Raj revealed that the officers from Federal Police and LTA are now locating the witnesses.
SSP Raj adds that they would also interview the owner of Raiwaqa Buses soon and if the need arises they would also question the bus driver.
Meanwhile, a medical team from the CWM hospital are expected to talk to the survivors from the bus fire who are currently staying at the Soqosoqo Vakamarama hall this afternoon.
Soqosoqo Vakamarama General Secretary, Adi Finau Tabakaucoro confirms she has been given the assurance from the Permanent Secretary Health, Dr Lepani Waqatakirewa, that the doctors will talk to the 40 survivors by this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Police have revealed that the 52yr old woman who passed away last night at the CWM hospital, received more then 80 percent burns after the bus fire. Police are in the process of informing her relatives after which the post mortem is expected to be conducted. The death toll for the Sigatoka bus crash is now eleven.
The tragedy was an isolated incident.
These are the sentiments of the Fiji Bus Operators Association after a meeting this afternoon on the bus fire tragedy that claimed 11 lives at Malaqere-qere, Sigatoka.
In a press statement after the meeting, the FBOA said while they express their condolences to the families of those that lost their lives in the tragedy, the public must understand this incident does not reflect the state of buses or the industry as a whole adding it was an isolated incident.
The FBOA said they are currently in the process of arranging a meeting with the LTA and other relevant bodies on the issue of 'safety of buses' as stated by the LTA and Interim Transport Minister Timoci Natuva.
The statement also said all buses currently in operation have met all the safety criteria from the LTA, as a pre-requisite to getting a certificate or registration.
It also states that LTA officials are required to be present at various stages of the construction of buses to carry out checks and inspections therefore to say they do not meet safety standards would be incorrect.
