After 20 years the Fiji Police Traffic Control Department has recorded the lowest number of road fatalities.

There were 47 road fatalities last year compared to 66 in 2008.

Director Traffic Control, SSP Mahesh Mishra said they are working towards a dramatic decrease this year.

According to Mishra, while there was an increase in motor-vehicles and motorists on our roads last year, there has been a reduction in the road deaths and accidents compared to previous years.

Stakeholders working with the Traffic Department include the Land Transport Authority, National Road Safety Council and the Department of National Roads.

Meanwhile, the no drop policy on speeding, careless driving and drink and drive is still in place.
