The people of Macuata say traditional values are more important than the current conservation programmes.

Assistant Roko Tui Macuata Mosese Nakoroi said they were ashamed that the killing of the turtles during the Annual Methodist conference has been blown out of proportion.

Nakoroi said the people of Macuata conserved their marine life during the last 2 years and it’s their traditional right to serve turtles for feasting during traditional gatherings and it is only the Vanua who can change it.

He said the provincial councils did not receive any official notification from the Fisheries department on the amount of turtles to be consumed although Fisheries officials say that they were only allowed to kill 4 endangered turtles.

Nakoroi said they have liaised with all relevant authorities
such as the Fisheries Ministry and followed the traditional protocol before catching the turtles.
