Toyota dealer in Fiji, Asco Motors confirms that they have sold less than five units of the latest Toyota Prius in the country.

Asco Motors says the Toyota Prius model recall highlighted is the latest model and the five units sold in Fiji are mostly capex and internal sales.

Asco reveals that they have not re‑ordered the latest model because of low sales.

The company also confirms that for the ones that have been sold, they will manage them on a case by case basis, individually.

Consumer Council of Fiji Chief Executive Officer Premila Kumar says it is good news that other models of the Toyota Prius are not being recalled.

USA Today reports that Toyota has launched a global recall of its redesigned Toyota Prius sedan after reports of a potentially deadly defect involving the parking brake.

It says that Toyota is recalling 340,000 units of the Prius globally, including 212,000 in Japan and 92,000 of the 2016 and 2017 models in the U.S.

Toyota says that there is a possibility that the parking brake could become inoperative on the involved vehicles.

If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than ‘Park’ while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Associated Press reports that Toyota has received reports of crashes, injuries and deaths and is still looking into the reports.

Toyota spokesman Victor Vanov says alleged crashes, injuries and fatalities are reported in many ways to many different organizations.

The company said in a statement that dealers will add clips on the top of the brake cable dust boots to prevent the cable from becoming inoperative.

Owners will be notified in November, and repairs will be free.
