More than 7,000 additional students are now attending tertiary institutions after the introduction of the National Toppers Scholarships and the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme last year.
Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy says the scheme was introduced to unlock the potential of those who had no way forward.
He says in 2013, 5,434 students were studying at tertiary institutions through i-Taukei scholarships, Multi Ethnic Affairs and PSC scholarships.
Under the new scheme, 12,943 students are attending tertiary institutions.
Doctor Reddy says Finance Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has requested that another group of children that have been forgotten by past governments should be assisted.
He says substantial funding will be provided in next year’s budget for this and details will be revealed during the budget address.
