A courageous last minute push by Fiji was not enough for the Flying Fijians as they were thrashed 45-21 by Tonga in the first Pacific Nations Cup game this afternoon.

Despite fly half Nicky Little's notching the first score through a penalty for Fiji to lead 3-nil in the opening minutes, Tonga capitalised on Fiji's mistakes during the line out and simple mistakes which saw the visitors leading 23-6 in the first half.

Despite being a man down in the second half, Tonga ran in two more tries for the score line to read 45-12.

Tonga's technical adviser and former Reds player, Toutai Kefu said that despite the Tongan players being unfit, they had been given a game plan to counter Fiji and they stuck to it.
