Tomasi Cama Junior is confident the New Zealand 7s team has what it takes to turn around their rough start to the HSBC World Sevens Series and win the Wellington Sevens.

Cama who retired last year to take up a performance analysis role with the New Zealand 7s team said the return of some experienced players should get New Zealand’s campaign back on track for the Wellington Sevens next weekend.

He said they have to improve their tactical awareness if they are to beat teams like Fiji, South Africa and England.

Cama said there are some exciting players in their 22-member training squad and once they start training together as a team and get the fitness right there should be improvements.

The New Zealand 7s team extended squad includes Sonny Bill Williams, Akira Ioane, Rieko Ioane, Ben Lam and Ardie Savea.

Coach Gordon Tietjens said he is working on ensuring that there is clarity on what they are trying to achieve as a team.

Scott Curry, Declan O’Donnell, DJ Forbes and Sherwin Stowers are not available because of injury, while All Black loose forward Liam Messam is unavailable due to rugby commitments in Japan.

Tietjens will name his final 12 men team to play in the Wellington 7s next Monday.

New Zealand who is the defending champion is pooled with South Africa, Scotland and Russia.

Meanwhile, Ben Ryan will name his final 14 players tomorrow.

Fiji is pooled with Japan, Argentina and Wales.

The Fiji 7s team will leave for New Zealand next Tuesday.

The Wellington 7s will be held next Saturday and Sunday.
