Fiji born Save Tokula and Henry Speight helped Waikato secure their first National 7s title in 12 years after beating Bay of Plenty 21-14 in the final at Queenstown yesterday.

The Cup final contest went down to the wire before Captain Tim Mikkelson scored a long range individual try with time up.

Tokula and Speight played key roles from the pool games to the final.

Meanwhile, New Zealand 7s Coach Gordon Tietjens, who also watched the two day event in Queenstown, will name his 16 players this week to start preparing for the Wellington and Las Vegas leg of the IRB World 7s Series.

Tietjens has identified some new players from the tournament who can make his training squad.
