More than 70,000 people in the Nadi district need immediate assistance after the severe flooding in the western division last month.

DISMAC said the distribution of ration to Ba and Nadi is expected to be completed in the next 7 days in view of the geographical scatterings of the areas to be covered, taking into account the deplorable road conditions.

According to DISMAC, 17,321 people have been given rations as at 31st January and more than 147,000 people need food rations.

More than 18,000 people need food rations in Nadroga, 8,500 people in Navosa, 70,000 people in Nadi, 13,150 people in Lautoka and Yasawa, 9.622 in Ba, more than 10,000 people in Tavua, 5,123 people in Nadarivatu and 12,804 people in Ra.

The Ministry of Health is the West is also concentrating on disease outbreak. The first phase concentrated on the evacuation centres through mobile medical services.

The second phase is the use of RFMF personnel who are assisting the ministry's Vector Spraying Team in the spraying exercise for the Nadi and Ba areas.

The public is warned to take precautionary measures prior to drinking water and consuming food.
