Close to 9,400 people are currently staying at evacuation centres around the country hoping that flood waters recede in their areas so that they can safely return to their homes.

The National Disaster Awareness Centre has revealed that out of over 108 evacuation centres, Labasa and Ba are accommodating the most people.

In the West, 1851 people are in the eight centres in Ba. Tavua has 35 people, Sigatoka has 379 people while Rakiraki has 30 people.

In Nadroga and Navosa, 678 sought refuge at the Dismac centres. In Tailevu there were 200 people in their 3 evacuation centres, 94 people in the 3 evacuation centres set up in Wainibuka.

Looking at Nausori, there are 101 people in the 3 centres. In Korovou 72 people went to the two DISMAC centres.

In Rewa, in the 16 centres set up, 805 people were recorded in the centres, in Korovou there were 72 people in the 2 centres.

Looking at Labasa, there were a total of 5 centres with a record number of 3,610 people.

The highest numbers were recorded at Holy Family Secondary School where 1500 are seeking refuge, 10 people at the Labasa Civic Centre and 2000 people at Labasa College.

Dismac revealed that many of those in Labasa had gone to the evacuation centre as a precautionary measure.
