Thousands Affected In Ba
In Ba town, almost all shops have suffered damage to stock. Many show glasses have also been smashed by the raging flood waters.
The situation is worse in the rural area where thousands of people in Ba have not had enough or no food and water supply. Many poorly constructed houses in Ba have also been completely destroyed and people are now hoping for immediate assistance. What they need right now is food, water, shelter and some warm clothes.
Some 200 families have been severely affected when raging flood waters swept through their homes in Yalalevu Ba during the height of the flash floods in the area.
Yalalevu resident Pushpa said her home was under four feet of flood waters and all their mattresses and clothes have been washed away. She said they had stocked up on groceries which also have been destroyed.
Pushpa said since the waters receded, they have not seen any official from DISMAC, Red Cross or any government agency and while they are trying to get back on their feet as there are about 30 families who have been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Din Dayal of Yalalevu said the flood waters rose very rapidly and many people in the area were not able to salvage much from their homes. He said they are hoping help arrives soon as they are still not able to make their way to the shopping centers to buy food and water.
In Moto Ba, 82 year old Ram Dayal said they are now running short of food supplies as it is not possible to get into the town area after the Moto bridge was washed away. The elderly man and his wife say several homes along the Moto river were flooded and the families are still taking refuge with neighbours.
Dayal said some are surviving on casava and tea and that no one has come to their assistance, not even the Red Cross or DISMAC.
In Rarawai, Ba, Master Rajen said they too are now stranded in the area without any food or drinking water and there has been no sign of any agency who can provide the much needed assistance to the worse affected families in their area.
We have also received reports that many squatters are now homeless in Ba as their lean-to homes have been completely destroyed. These people do not have food, water and shelter and sheltering at other peoples' homes.
