Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York Peter Thomson has identified two important areas that need urgent action by UN members.
While briefing members of the United Nations on the humanitarian situation in Fiji after the passing of Tropical Cyclone Winston, Thomson has requested members of the UN not to issue travel advisories saying do not visit Fiji.
Thomson said the Fiji Tourism industry is open for business.
Thomson said hotels and resorts are open, the sea is still great to swim in and the Fijian hospitality for which Fijians are famous for still exists.
Thomson said apart from requesting for international help in terms of funds, Fiji is also requesting countries to take action now in fighting against climate change.
Thomson added Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston is a result of climate change.
Thomson said everyone needs to start implementing the Paris Agreement.
The agreement will enter into effect once 55 parties accounting for a total of 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions have ratified it.
The signing ceremony will be held in April.
