Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum stresses that there are targetted initiatives mapped out in the 2009 National Budget to try and assist the sugar industry on the national economic level.

After concerns from the National Farmers Union that government should have put more focus on the Sugar Industry and not the tourism sector, Sayed Khiayum said their focus is to firstly try and secure the much needed land for the sugar sector.

The National Farmers Union has raised concern that government has allocated a large sum of money to the Tourism Industry because hoteliers overseas benefit from the profits.

Union National Secretary, Sanjit Maharaj said government should have put more focus on the Sugar Industry which is facing difficulty.
