“When an ordinary citizen mentions the word FICAC, it sends shivers down some people’s spines.”
Attorney General and Finance Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum made this comment while speaking at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption awards night.
He reminded the employees of FICAC not to abuse their powers.
He also stressed that initially a lot of the complaints that FICAC received was about administrative issues and not necessarily corruption issues.
He further added that many ordinary Fijians saw FICAC as an avenue through which they could get inefficient systems corrected.
Meanwhile, Sayed-Khaiyum says it is critical that Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption remains absolutely clean.
Sayed-Khaiyum says this is why the levels of salary that FICAC officers receive is much higher than other agencies.
He says this is precisely done to keep FICAC clean.
Sayed-Khaiyum says they believe FICAC needs to be correctly funded because it plays a pivotal role.
