Villagers of Nukubalavu in Cakaudrove are restricted from wearing shoes inside the village while girls are not allowed to grow their hair long and wear shorts.

Nukubalavu Chief Ratu Suliano Naulu has today told Fijivillage that these are old protocols of the village which they have decided to bring back, which include that the girls from the village have to maintain traditional Fijian hairstyle known as the ABuiniga@.

Ratu Suliano added that the old village protocols have been put into place to maintain the Fijian culture and for the community to respect the tradition.

In response to the health risks of walking barefoot in the village, Ratu Naulu said the village is constructing footpaths for the safety of the villagers.
