The termites currently affecting areas of Lautoka may have entered through cargo from abroad.
That was the revelation to the Kadivuka Bio Security Taskforce by two termite specialists from Australia, Doctor Brent Peters and Craig Burleigh who were in the country for a week.
Spokesperson Rosa Dalituicama said the two who are experts on termites said that the termites may have been in the country for a few years now due to the weather in the west and have started growing in numbers.
Dalituicama added that at the moment, their officers are focusing on locating the nests of the termites so that they will be able to stop its spread.
At the moment a total of 936 houses, 16 schools and 2,285 trees have been infested.
