The termite infestation, which has plagued the Lautoka area, has now spread to Labasa in the Northern Division.
Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Colonel Mason Smith confirmed to Fijivillage this afternoon that eight houses in Labasa are now infested with the same termite species which was initially detected in Lautoka.
Colonel Smith said urgent steps are being taken to confine the infestation.
Colonel Smith also confirmed that the termite infestation in the Lautoka area is slowly spreading.
Two bio-security teams from Lautoka are now preparing to be deployed to the North to start the fumigation process and destroy the termite nests before more houses are infested.
The teams will also investigate how the termites got from Lautoka to Labasa.
