Terminated members of the Great Council of Chiefs have filed another legal action, this time against the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo and the Interim Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.
Four High Chiefs, the Tui Tavua, Ratu Ovini Bokini, the Turaga na Ka Levu, Ratu Sakiusa Makutu, Bau Chief Ratu Epenisa Cakobau and Cakaudrove Chief Ratu Ratavo Lalabalavu have filed a judicial review seeking certain declarations.
This includes that the Fijian Affairs Composition of the Great Council of Chiefs Regulations, made by the President on August 24th, 2007 is legally invalid, null and void and of no legal effect, as it was made by the President for improper purposes, in excess of his powers and the notice be quashed by the court.
The Chiefs also seek a declaration that the terms of appointment of members of the GCC as at April 12th 2007 remain valid and continue to be in force.
Speaking outside the court house, Lawyer representing the terminated GCC members Savenaca Komaisavai revealed that the Judge has not allowed the Judicial review to be joined with their Constitutional Redress case. He stressed that they are reluctant to take legal action against the President but it must be done.
