Police have raised serious concerns over children being left alone at home after a 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a village in Navosa last night.

Assistant Spokesperson, Corporal Josaia Weicavu confirmed that they had arrested and charged a 30-year-old man of Sigatoka for the alleged rape.

He said the girl was alone at home when the man came and asked for a newspaper to smoke tobacco. He then took the girl to a vacant house and allegedly raped her. The girl was staying with her aunt and uncle who were drinking grog at another house in the village when the alleged incident took place.

Corporal Weicavu said it is a serious concern that the safety of children came second to drinking grog and socializing for some and this leads to criminals taking advantage of the situation.
