With 57 days to go for the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea, Team Fiji needs financial sponsors to make its target of 1 million dollars.
The government today presented a $300,000 cheque to FASANOC to assist in Team Fiji’s preparations for the Pacific Games in July.
While presenting the cheque, Fiji Sports Commission Chairman Peter Mazey said that they are hoping to make another payment to Team Fiji next week.
Mazey says it has been quite difficult for them as many world sporting events are held this year including the youth championships and the Olympic qualifying rounds.
He hopes that corporate houses and the people of the country will also come forward to assist Team Fiji.
Team Fiji’s Chef De Mission, Cathy Wong says they need over $1 million to send the team over to PNG.
They are also calling for corporate sponsors to dig deeper into their pockets and assist the 26 sports taking part in the Pacific Games.
Wong says the $300,000 given by the National Sports Commission will assist in the first charter service payment however more funds are needed.
FASANOC has already made a submission to the government to provide additional funding.
Mazey says they are hoping to do this next week.
