Team Fiji confident of 200m gold
Athletics Fiji President Albert Miller said Fiji athletes clocked good times in the heats last night and a much stronger performance is expected in the finals.
Miller said he had a meeting with the athletes this morning reminding them to stay focused.
Banuve Tabakaucoro finished his heat with a time of 22.32 seconds while fellow athlete Isikeli Rokowaqa clocked the fastest time of 22.12 seconds.
PNG’s Nelson Stone clocked a time of 22.14 seconds.
In the women’s division, PNG’s Toea Wisil is favorite with a time of 25.12 seconds in her heat.
Fiji’s Paulini Korowaqa and Sisilia Seavula are also in the 200 meter final today at 6.50pm.
The men’s 200 meter final starts at 8.10pm.
Also today at 6.20pm, Mereseini Naidau will run in the women’s 1,500 meter final.
Meanwhile, four gold medals are at stake in the men’s archery competition with Robert Elder, George Fong and Kavitesh Sharma to feature in the quarterfinals from 4 this afternoon.
Weightlifting can also provide close to four gold medals today with Mozima Hussain, Sainimere Abariga, Suliana Kolitagane, Ana Garnett, Elesi Ikanidrodro and Helen Pahulu all in the finals.
Powerlifting starts at 3 this afternoon.
Looking at the medal tally: New Caledonia is first with 93 gold, 76 silver and 39 bronze medals, Tahiti is second with 45 gold, 31 silver and 32 bronze while Papua New Guinea has claimed the third spot with 30 gold, 17 silver and 41 bronze medals.
Fiji has slipped on the medal tally to fourth position with 27 gold, 33 silver and 35 bronze medals.
