A 38 year old computer teacher in Kadavu appeared in court today charged with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old student.

The court heard on the 29th of last month between 6-7pm, the teacher called the student to check a listing on the computer and allegedly raped her.

According to Police Prosecutor Sargent Leone Lautabui, the complainant could not call for help because her teacher had allegedly forcefully closed her mouth.

Lautabui told the Suva Magistrates Court that the student later told her friends when they met at the school dining hall.

Today, the teacher's lawyer Filimoni Gonerogo made an application for bail but this was objected to by Lautabui due to the seriousness of the offence.

Magistrate Pamila Ratnayake has adjourned a decision on bail to Friday while the teacher remains remanded in custody.
