Serious concerns are now being raised in relation to students being allegedly sexually abused by the people who are trusted to provide security and care.

This follows revelation that a 46 year old Primary school teacher of Labasa has been taken into Police custody for allegedly defiling a class eight student.

The alleged incident happened between May and last month.

Police confirm the teacher is alleged to have defiled the girl in his vehicle for a number of times, as well as at the girl’s residence when the parents were away at work.

Earlier this month, the girl reported the matter to the Head teacher of the school, who then informed the parents and the Education office.

This is the second case of alleged defilement in a week from the Northern Division. The first being where a 48 year old school Principal appeared in the Labasa Magistrate Court on Monday last week facing charges of defilement, indecent assault of eight secondary school students.

Assistant Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said this incident should be taken as a wakeup call for all parents.
