As the festive season draws near with a lot of sports activities and family outings planned, the Fiji Police Force is calling on village heads, community leaders and parents to start stressing road safety to the young children.
Director Traffic, SSP Mahesh Mishra stressed this as the road death toll now stands at 39 compared to 29 for the same period last year. SSP Mishra said of this 39 casualties, 17 fatalities were pedestrians.
Meanwhile, the Land Transport Authority said a major concern to them is the fact that close to 15, 000 vehicles which are running on our roads have not been through their annual fitness tests.
Chief Executive, Naisa Tuinaceva said these cars are potential risks to the pedestrians as they are deemed as being unregistered with many of them maybe derelict or in some state of run-down.
