Taxi fare increases only by 50c
Village News has today established that the fares have only increased by 50 cents.
As concerns continue to be raised on how the 33 percent increase has been incorporated in the current fare, an inquiry by Village News has revealed that the fares have not increased by 33 percent as earlier claimed by the LTA and the Fiji Taxi Union.
We took a simple calculation after establishing that changes have only been made to the flag fall rate or starting rate of the taxi fare from $1.00 to $1.50. This means that your taxi fare will only increase by 50 cents now and not by 33 percent as earlier announced.
We questioned Fiji Taxi Union General Secretary Rishi Ram in the last hour. The question raised was "What fare will a passenger pay now if he was paying $6.00 to reach a certain destination before the fare increase". Based on the 33 percent increase on the fare, the new fare should be $7.98 but that is not the case as the fare will only increase by 50 cents.
After assessing our question, Ram had this to say.
Ram has now blamed the Outgoing Interim Transport Minister, Manu Korovulavula for the mess but he said the Taxi Union is happy with the 50 cents increase in the flag fall rate.
And this afternoon, the FTU is calling on the Land Transport Authority to rectify the anomaly and must come forward to admit their mistake. However, LTA CEO Etuate Koroi maintains that the increase in Taxi fare is at 33 percent as announced earlier.
