Taxi drivers are obligated under the Crimes Decree to report any suspicious behavior and also to report abduction and child prostitution.

That was the revelation at the Save the Children Workshop that was held in Suva earlier this week.

In the workshop, participants from various community groups as well as from NGOs were informed that if a child under 18 years of age is taken from her or his home to go and meet with their partners, that is abduction and the taxi driver can also be held accountable.

They were also informed that since many people rely on taxi services, drivers should report cases such as when they pick up school children and drop them at places where children should not be such as hotels and motels or even when they see suspicious people picking up children.

Fiji Taxi Union General Secretary, Rishi Ram said the drivers should not take the matter lightly.
