A 41 year old taxi driver found guilty of the attempted murder of his defacto wife has been sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Lautoka High Court.

The court heard that on 23rd June last year at Elevuka Ba, Mohammed Atik went to his defacto wife who had been renting separately on the purpose of bringing her back to look after his children aged 6 and 9 years.

The court also heard that Atik had taken a cane knife with the intention of punishing her if she did not agree to return with him.

An argument developed between the two after which Atik dragged his defacto wife into the compound and hit her with the cane knife on her head and arm.

As a result his defacto received serious injuries to her head including fractured skull.

Judge Justice Paul Madigan while delivering the sentence said that Atik had planned to do this by bringing a cane knife and hiding it in the bush.

Judge Madigan also said that the court have shown him little mercy to him and sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment.
