The Fiji Taxi Union has come out firing against a paid Land Transport Authority advertisement in one of the dailies yesterday, that it is a requirement under the law, that as soon as a taxi has been hired the driver must switch on his metre.

General Secretary Rishi Ram said the Union was not consulted on this move, which now means that even if a person is to hire a taxi for example from Suva to Nadi, the metre must still be turned on.

The advertisement by the LTA Chief Executive Etuate Koroi said any driver who fails to adhere to this law will be fined $50 or face a maximum penalty of $500 or 3 months in jail.

The Ad also read that the Authority may suspend or cancel the driver's license if it is satisfied that the person has a continuing record of disregarding the law.
