No rain could lead to food shortage for Tavua farmers.

The Advisory Councillor for Yasiyasi and Nalawa area, Umesh Prasad said that unable to reap the benefits from their land due to the effects of the dry weather, farmers in Tavua are seriously concerned that they will soon not be able to feed their families if it does not rain.

Prasad said that cane tops have started dropping and other crops are fast drying and dying.

He said the weather is expected to continue for next two months and by then farmers will be left with nothing to feed their families.

He said there are 500 household in the Yasiyasi/Nalawa area and 95% of the people are farmers who only get money after selling their crops.

He said wells, boreholes and creeks have dried.

Prasad said the government has put water tanks in areas as well as trucks are carting water more assistance will be needed if the dry spell continues.
