Tarte’s resignation not surprising-Siwatibau
These are the sentiments of Suliana Siwatibau and the Ousted Opposition Leader Mick Beddoes after the Chairman of the Fiji Media Council, Daryl Tarte resigned from the NCBBF yesterday.
Siwatibau, who was the first to resign from the National Council and the People's Charter process because she did not agree with the appointment of the Interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama as Great Council of Chiefs Chairman, said she is also saddened by Tarte's resignation.
Mick Beddoes, who was the second person to resign from the National Council because of the alleged double standards practiced by the interim government on a number of issues, said he was expecting the Media Council Chairman to resign in light of the interim government's current relations with the media.
The Media Council Chairman Daryl Tarte resigned yesterday afternoon after a media council meeting in which it was viewed that the Charter process is seriously flawed and will not achieve the desired outcomes.
In a press statement released explaining the reasons for his resignation, Tarte said the process was not autonomous and independent of the Interim Government as the Interim PM, Ministers and the Military are still very much involved in the way the process is being driven forward.
Tarte adds the Media Council is also against the interim government's attitude towards the media on the aspect of freedom of speech, the media reporting public opinion as well as their deportation of Fiji Sun Publisher Russel Hunter.
He is also concerned that the FHRC Report by Dr James Anthony will be considered by the NCBBF. He said the media report has no credibility and is not worth any consideration by a reputable body.
The Media Council Chairman said regrettably he considers the process has been so compromised, he no longer believes the charter concept is viable nor in the interest of Fiji and so had to hand in his resignation from the NCBBF.
