The Fiji Electricity Authority clarifies that 90% of the poor will not be affected by the 1 cent per unit tariff increase.
Acting Chief Executive Sunil De Silva said simply put, those who pay $50 or less for their electricity bill a month or who use 250 units of power or less a month, will not be affected by the tariff increase.
All religious organizations, schools, street lights and other non-profit organizations are exempted from this tariff increase.
However, De Silva added if businesses increase their cost of business as a result of the tariff increase, the FEA is powerless in that area and cannot do much.
Cabinet approved the last phase of the electricity tariff increase approved by the Commerce Commission in September 2004, with effect from this Friday, the 1st of August.
