Australia's High Commissioner to Fiji James Batley said proposed talks between Fiji's political parties will not do enough to move the country towards democracy.

Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama last week invited all political parties to meet for discussions about ways to move the country forward.

Batley told Radio Australia that a return to democracy in Fiji remains Australia's key objective, and while a forum is a good start it will not solve the issue.

He said, the commission doesn't see the political dialogue as a substitute for having an election, but does accept that having political dialogue can help in moving Fiji forward.
