Take typhoid spread seriously
This is the step taken by Health Ministry officials in a bid to try and reduce the number of typhoid cases in the country as the total number has increased to 112 as of Friday.
Health Ministry Spokesperson Iliesa Tora said that people should be aware that they should wash their hands thoroughly after visiting the toilet and after doing small chores around the house, before preparing meals.
Tora added that the Ministry has also sent out a strong message to people who drink grog, especially those who mix it, to be extra careful and wash their hands with soap and water every time they visit the restroom.
Tora said that simple health rules like these that are neglected and taken for granted.
Another point the Ministry stressed is that all drinking water is boiled and all food is covered to avoid flies resting on the food and spreading germs.
The general public is also advised to see that the toilet is kept clean at all times.
To date there are 25 cases recorded in the North, 42 in the west and 45 for Central and Eastern including three cases sent from Taveuni.
The Health Ministry also said the severity of the illness is generally associated with the delay in seeking treatment, therefore the ministry advises if anyone has a high fever and has flu like symptoms that extends beyond three to four days without any sign of recovery, should seek consultation at the nearest health facility as soon as possible.
