The National Fire Authority is calling on people to be mindful of the safety of their family and their property when handling fire crackers, matches, diyas or candles this Diwali.
The Fire Investigating Officer, Shamsher Nabi said all windows should be closed if possible as a precaution against stray firecrackers flying into the home.
He said parents should supervise their children very closely this Diwali to avoid any accident.
Nabi said people using decorative lights this diwali should also take precautionary measures for a safe diwali.
He is also asking women to stay in the kitchen until the food is cooked and never to leave cooking unattended as this has been one of the major causes of home fires.
He said loose clothes should not be worn while cooking, curtains and small towels should be kept away from the stoves, children should not be allowed in the kitchen unsupervised during cooking, and frying pan should not be filled to more than half while cooking to avoid catching fire.
Nabi is calling on people to call the fire brigade on 911 in case of a fire.
