Dairy farmers in Wainivesi and Waimaro are bracing themselves for the worst as their livelihood and main source of income is expected to be severely affected as their farms remain under quarantine.
One of the Partners of Farm Technic Limited in Wainivesi, Ram Chand said the disease found in cattle called Brucellosis, could cripple the dairy industry in the Tailevu North area.
Chand said farmers in the area will struggle to make ends meet as they cannot sell raw milk until further notice.
The Dairy farms in Wainivesi and Waimaro which have been confirmed to have cattle infected with the disease Brucellosis may have to remain under quarantine for up to three years as the Quarantine Department tries to eradicate the disease from the area.
Principle Vet Officer Dr. Robin Achari confirmed that these farms will not be permitted to sell raw milk directly to customers until the disease is completely removed.
