Dairy farms in the Wainivesi and Waimaro areas in Tailevu North are under quarantine and the area has been declared a red zone after an infectious disease was detected amongst cattle in the area.
Principal Veterinarian Dr. Robin Achari confirmed that around 200 dairy farms in the Tailevu North area are being tested for the disease and they have been stopped from supplying raw milk directly to clients, while all cattle found with the disease will be slaughtered.
Dr. Achari said the disease can be transmitted to humans if they come into contact with cattle or milk contaminated by Brucellosis.
All vehicles going in and out of the area are also being disinfected before they are permitted to leave the area.
The Quarantine Department stressed that Rewa Dairy Products are safe for consumption as they are pasteurized which kills the bacteria which causes Brucellosis.
They also stressed that people should not panic as they have the situation under control.
