Tailevu Chiefs reject proposal
Speaking in Fijian in Nausori yesterday, Komai Nausori and Chairman of the Tailevu Bose Vanua, Ratu Meli Baleinaivalu said the 22 chiefs from the various Tikina have rejected the two proposals, after obtaining legal advice on the matter.
Ratu Meli said the chiefs have decided that the GCC must be restored to its full membership, functions, operations and procedures, prior to the 5th of December, 2006, as they stress that the constitution which is the Supreme Law of the land, is still in place and the legality of the Interim Government is being challenged in the High court.
On the proposed People's Charter, the Bose Vanua of Tailevu has resolved, that there is no merit in the proposal by the Interim Government to establish a charter as the constitution does not provide for the establishment of such a body by an interim regime.
Ratu Tevita said the chiefs of Tailevu believe that such a charter should be set up by a democratically elected government.
Also present in Nausori during the announcement of Tailevu's official stance yesterday, were former GCC senators and Bau chief, Ratu George Cakobau and Ratu Inoke Seru.
Meanwhile, there was no discussion during the meeting of Tailevu chiefs last week, on whether they should rally behind Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who hails from the province and who will go down in the history books of Fiji, as the first from Tailevu to hold the Prime Minister's position.
Bose Vanua Chairman and Komai Nausori, Ratu Meli Baleinaivalu said no one brought up the issue about Commodore Bainimarama and his interim government since they are only discussing the legality of the GCC review committee and the People's Charter which they have rejected.
